Local Groups Startup Scheme
In May 2001 the Council of the Philosophical Society of England made the decision to grant recognition to affiliated branches of the Society.
Any Philosophical Society of England member can start up an affiliated group. Affiliated groups are free to use the Society Seal logo in their posters and other advertising materials. In addition, the Philosophical Society of England member who leads an affiliated group is entitled to use the Society letterhead. Affiliated groups are responsible for their own funding. Membership dues are paid to the group Treasurer, not to the Society.
In addition to these privileges, local group members have the opportunity to enjoy the added benefits of membership of the International Society for Philosophers, which is responsible for running the Pathways to Philosophy programs.
Each affiliated group of the Philosophical Society of England is expected to subscribe fully to the aims and principles of the Philosophical Society. Discussions should be free and open, without bar to religion, race or creed. Members should treat one another with courtesy and respect at all times. The aim is to share our enthusiasm for philosophy, to strive for understanding, to become better persons through the study of philosophy and its history, and through the exercise of our powers of reason in all aspects of our lives.
If you need help or advice with any aspect of the startup process, please e-mail klempner@fastmail.net. If you succeed in getting a group going, tell me about it and I will include a feature in our e-mail newsletter Philosophy Pathways. Good luck!
